One site, one school, one family

Following the Government’s recent decision to introduce a 20% VAT on independent school fees, Windermere School will be consolidating its Junior and Senior Schools onto one campus, Browhead.

While this move has been part of our long-term vision, the election results and the looming VAT implementation have accelerated our plans. This decision allows us to preserve the exceptional educational experience we offer without compromising the quality or breadth of opportunities for our pupils.

By January 2025, we expect to complete the transition, relocating the Junior School from Ambleside Road to beautifully refurbished and renovated facilities on the Senior School site. This timeline is, of course, dependent on the timely completion of building work.

In conjunction with this move, we are pleased to announce a reduction in fees for our youngest year groups, while ensuring that fee increases for all other pupils will remain below the level of the new VAT.

As Mr. Peter Hogan, Chair of Governors, expressed: “Faced with such a sudden increase in costs, we are not willing to cut back on the outstanding experiences we offer our pupils or compromise the quality of our extra-curricular activities. At the same time, we are doing all we can to protect families from feeling the full effect of the tax.”

Uniting the school on one site will not only enhance the learning environment for all students but also help us streamline running costs. Our younger pupils, from Pre-School to Year 6, will benefit from access to the Senior School's specialist facilities, including Design Technology, Music and Art, while enjoying safe, designated spaces such as newly created play and Forest School areas.

Moreover, this transition presents exciting opportunities for our Senior School pupils. They will have more chances to embody our Round Square values of Leadership and Service, supporting their younger peers in both academic and co-curricular activities. This collaboration will foster shared learning, teamwork and mutual respect, deepening the family atmosphere that has always defined our school.

Head of Windermere School, Mr. Frank Thompson, shared his thoughts on the move: “The magic of our Junior School lies not in its building, but in the incredible community of children, staff and families. We are committed to preserving that special spirit as we come together as one school on one site, and we look forward to hearing the happy sound of our youngest pupils in the grounds of our shared campus.”

As we prepare for this exciting new chapter, we remain dedicated to maintaining the unique values and spirit of Windermere School, ensuring that the traditions and excellence that have shaped our community will continue for generations to come.
