We are absolutely delighted to share that Stannite Stephanie de Boissiere has generously pledged to sponsor one of our new rooms—an incredibly kind gesture that reflects her enduring connection to Windermere School, even from across the Atlantic.
Now 80 years old and living in The Bahamas, Stephanie attended Elleray from around 1949 to 1954 as a day girl, travelling each day from Kendal. She fondly remembers her early years at school and still recalls the traditions and characters that shaped her childhood, including Headmistress Miss Hoskins and her memorable run-in with Tuesday’s lunch menu.
“Every Tuesday they served beetroot,” Stephanie recalls. “Apparently, I didn’t like it—so I stuffed it into the pocket of my smock, which my mother discovered when I took it home to wash!” diplomatic conversation between Stephanie’s mother and Miss Hoskins resulted in a rare exception being made. “That was seventy-five years ago,” she adds with a smile, “and I have never eaten beetroot since—nor will I eat any meal where they are just a decoration!”
Stephanie’s family ties to the school continued when her daughter joined Elleray and later Browhead in the 1970s, completing her O and A Levels at Windermere School.
It’s stories like Stephanie’s that bring our community to life. Her warm memories and loyal support are a reminder that a Windermere education lasts far beyond the school years—it becomes part of who you are.
Thank you, Stephanie, for helping us shape the next generation of Windermere pupils. We can’t wait to unveil your sponsored room, now warmly named Tarn Hows, as part of this exciting new chapter. Your name with be remembered and honoured forever at Windermere School.
